Chelsea vs. Arsenal – Football Match Report – May 12, 2021

Arsenal bolstered their European hopes with a fortuitous victory over Chelsea on Wednesday.

The win places Mikel Arteta’s men three points behind fifth-placed West Ham, two behind sixth-placed Liverpool and one adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in seventh, though all three hold at least one game in hand over the Gunners.

Arsenal rode good fortune to take an early — and ultimately decisive — lead against their more dominant London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

Kai Havertz missed a gilt-edged chance to give Chelsea the lead in the 11th minute after racing in behind the Arsenal defence, but his casual shot with only the keeper to beat went well over the bar and into the stands.

Arsenal capitalised just five minutes later thanks to an embarrassing blunder from Chelsea midfielder Jorginho whose no-look back-pass to Kepa Arrizabalaga nearly rolled into an empty net. The goalkeeper’s desperate diving save to keep the ball out went straight to an awaiting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who teed up Emile Smith Rowe for an easy finish.

Chelsea thought they found an equaliser near the hour mark when Christian Pulisic chested home from a corner kick, but VAR rightly ruled the American was offside when Havertz knocked his header toward the far post.

The Blues saw two attempts hit the bar in the dying moments but couldn’t find the needed breakthrough before the final whistle sounded.

Arsenal will play their penultimate match of the season next Wednesday when they visit Crystal Palace, before wrapping up against Brighton at the Emirates four days later.

Chelsea, who remain in fourth with loss, will play in Saturday’s FA Cup final against Leicester ahead of a Premier League match against the Foxes on May 18.
