Manchester City vs. Newcastle United – Football Match Report – December 26, 2020

Manchester City climbed to fifth place in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday at the Etihad.

Goals in each half from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres meant Pep Guardiola’s men leapfrogged from ninth place with the result.

Gundogan put City in front just before the quarter-hour mark when he stabbed home a Raheem Sterling cutback after the England forward patiently waited for him to come free near the six-yard box.

Torres added the finishing touch in the 55th minute after latching onto a deflected Rodrigo cross in the middle of the area. The ex-Valencia man calmly stoked home while he sent Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow the other way.

The victory gives City 26 points from 14 matches, one behind fourth-placed Manchester United. Newcastle remain in 12th with 18 points.
